Differences Between DBK and Meske Roster Construction

Differences Between DBK and Meske Roster Construction

Louisville volleyball enters a new era under head coach Dan Meske following the departure of Dani Busboom Kelly (DBK). While change is inevitable, roster construction and system implementation will be key areas to watch as Meske takes over.

Formation Shifts: 6-2 to 5-1?

Last season, Louisville primarily ran a 6-2 but leaned heavily toward a 5-1 as sophomore setter Nayelis Cabello stepped into a more consistent role in post season play. With the return of middle blocker and All-American Cara Cresse, will Louisville be shifting fully back to a 5-1? This adjustment would allow Cresse to maximize her offensive potential, particularly in running more slide attacks—her most dominant play.

To put it into perspective, in a 5-1, Cresse hit an astounding .440 in 2023, a performance that played a key role in her All-American accolades. If Meske commits to the 5-1, how much more of an offensive threat can Nayelis Cabello develop into as well?

The Libero Question: Life After Elena Scott

One of Meske’s biggest challenges will be replacing Elena Scott, arguably the best libero in program history. In the 2024 season, Scott passed a 2.45 at a 59% good pass percentage—elite numbers that will be difficult to replicate.

The only returning player with collegiate experience at the libero position is Kamden Schrand. She received just 72 total balls last season but passed 180 balls during her freshman year. The question remains: Will Schrand step up to become Louisville’s next defensive anchor?

Defensive Adjustments: How Will a 5-1 Impact Blocking?

Louisville led the nation in blocks per set last season, averaging 3.09 per set in the 6-2. The defensive identity of this team was a cornerstone of DBK’s system. A shift to a 5-1 could potentially impact blocking efficiency. Will this be a trade-off for a more consistent offensive flow, or can Louisville maintain its status as a defensive powerhouse?

Key Additions: The Chloe Effect

The roster is also bolstered by key new additions, including Purdue transfer Chloe Chicoine and incoming freshman Chloe Meester. Meester, a multi-sport athlete who just won a state championship in women’s basketball, is sure to bring her athleticism and competitiveness to the court. Her development will be one to watch.

Continuity vs. Change: Meske’s Staff Retains Recruiting Leadership

While DBK’s departure signals a new chapter, Meske’s decision to retain longtime recruiting coordinator Todd Chamberlain, now Associate Head Coach, suggests continuity in roster philosophy. This move indicates that while Meske will bring his own coaching style, the core principles of Louisville volleyball recruitment and player development will remain intact.

Final Thoughts

Change is inevitable in college sports, but Louisville’s foundation remains strong. The transition from DBK to Meske will be fascinating to watch, particularly in how the roster evolves, how systems are adjusted, and whether Louisville can maintain its elite status in the NCAA.
