Jays Looking Sharp

Jays Looking Sharp

This past weekend the Bluejays travelled to UMKC for the second series of scrimmages in their spring play. This was an incredibly important set of games for the Bluejays as it was their first official matches out under the new head coach, Brian Rosen.

The event was hosted by UMKC, but the Jays saw many matchups including Wichita State, Missouri, Kansas, and Tulsa. Because of this, the team was given many opportunities to try out new lineups and everyone had a chance to put their skills on display.

One exciting highlight was the liberos, sophomore Sydney Breissinger and transfer Saige Damrow both looked impressive. There was great consistency for both in serve receive and excellent defensive plays. We will have to see who will get the starting jersey going into the fall season. This will be an exciting matchup to watch.

In addition, the three middles on the team also made a big impact for the Jays. This includes senior Kiara Reinhardt, transfer Eloise Brandewie, and sophomore Jaya Johnson who is moving into a new role as middle. Johnson previously played on the right side last season, but is looking to return to her original position.

The standout of the day was freshman Abbey Hayes out of the outside. Considering she should still be in high school right now, it is very impressive she is already making her mark on the team. Not only was she scoring out of the front row, but also making great plays out of the back.

There is only one more spring scrimmage to go, which will be on April 25th before the Omaha supernovas match. The big positions to keep an eye out for will be who gets the starting spots as middles and libero.
