New Longhorn of the Week: Ramsey Gary

It's time to introduce a new series called New Longhorn of the Week - every week (or every other week) we'll post an article highlighting one of the new transfers or freshmen until we've gotten through all eight players. These articles will aim to introduce these players before they even hit the court, with questions about their playing style on the court, their personalities off the court, their thoughts on the Texas gym and the city of Austin so far, and much more!
This week, we'll be starting with Ramsey Gary, a DS who transferred from Indiana less than two months ago. A 2024 All Big Ten Second Team player, she is one of the most prolific defensive players in the country and was one of the biggest names in the portal. With two years of eligibility remaining, Ramsey will now join fellow Indiana native Emma Halter to lead the Texas back row.
Even though the two didn't know each other very well in Indiana, they, along with the rest of the littles, have meshed very quickly in Austin. The group of 5 defenders has made it a point to try a new coffee shop with each other every single week. Even in just the short period of time they've known each other, Ramsey says "We just bring each other up in so many ways."
For Ramsey, the decision to come to Texas was an easy one, saying she knew Austin was home before she even came on her official visit—"My whole family just felt the love here." But there are bigger things on the docket for her time in Austin. "I wanted to step out of my comfort zone, I wanted to be in a gym where it's really competitive, and at the end of the day I wanted to win." A natty is certainly on the bucket list, and competing for one was a major factor in her move from Indiana to Texas.
As for the biggest strength she brings to Texas? After two years of wearing the jersey, it's "My confidence and leadership. I'm not really loud outside of the court, but I bring that presence and energy onto the court." Along with Emma Halter, Texas will have a very experienced and vocal back row.
I also asked her about her life off the court, and she mentioned how much she loves travel and shopping, to her bank account's dismay. Family is also super important to her, and she enjoys hanging out with her niece and two nephews. The best part about Austin for Ramsey so far is all the different restaurants in the city. "I like to try different foods, and I feel like Austin's so diverse in that."
If she had to play a sport outside of volleyball, it would definitely be basketball since she was raised on the sport. "My dad played basketball, my whole family played basketball. Indiana too is a basketball state." Lucky for her, there's some pretty good women's basketball in Texas too (#1 in the country, in fact). Alternatively though, she would choose ping pong, adding "It was always fun to beat my siblings in it" growing up.
Texas fans will first to get to see Ramsey in action in the spring matches starting in late March. She's a fantastic addition both on and off the court, so Texas fans have a lot to look forward to.
