'24 Captains: Top Candidates

With the 2024 captains of Merritt Beason and Lexi Rodriguez graduating, Nebraska Volleyball has to figure out who the next court leaders will be. Every offseason, anyone on the team who wants to be a captain must prove why they deserve the spot, but it’s a large responsibility – especially in a program that deeply values its team culture and tight bonds.

Senior Rebekah Allick is a frontrunner for the role. The homegrown Husker bleeds red, and is the emotional heart and soul of the team. Since her days as a freshman, she ruled the net with confidence and always gave it her all in each and every match. While she is known for being loud and energetic, she also has a strong emotional intelligence in regards to her teammates and opponents. Both on the court and off, Rebekah epitomizes the program culture, she would be a great fit.

The other top candidate, Junior Bergen Reilly (wow it feels weird to call her a junior already). Since her freshman days, Bergen’s position as a setter has inherently cultivated her leadership skills. Since then, she has refined other aspects of her game; becoming an effective backrow player and even more impressive blocker, and has even thrown in some celebrations amidst her stone-cold disposition. Her influence on the team emulates Lexi’s in how her actions speak louder than words; they aren’t the vocal leaders on the court, but they will lead by example.

Other contenders (in Husker Nation’s eyes) include Harper Murray, Taylor Landfair, and Andi Jackson. One year ago, one would likely be surprised to see Harper’s name on this list, but her growth over the past year is undeniable. She has matured in every aspect of her life – from her game to her brain – and she should not be underestimated in any capacity. Taylor, the oldest player on the team as a redshirt senior, would be able to implement her veteran experience as well as infectious personality to serve as a captain. Andi’s name was thrown out a few times as well, and with her blooming potential, I would love to see her carry an even larger role for the team – both on and off the court.
