Create a Player ProfileEarly Trends Revealed: Teams With the Most Players Entering the Portal
The NCAA Transfer Portal officially opened and within the first few days, we have already seen significant movement among teams, with many players seeking new opportunities elsewhere.
Some of the teams seeing the most players enter the portal so far are:
- Old Dominion: The team leads with 6 transfers entering the portal. The main driving force for such a large turnover seems to be team culture issues and poor communication practices between coaches and players.
- Memphis: 5 players have entered the portal from here, which comes as no surprise given the departure of head coach Sean Burdette after 7 years. Coaching changes are one of, if not the biggest cause leading to a high number of transfers, as athletes often don’t want to risk the unpredictability of playing under a new coach.
- Marshall: Currently, 4 players are entered into the portal. The Sun Belt Conference, in general, has been particularly affected, with 27 total transfers from schools in the conference so far.
- San Jose State: Also with 4 transfers, the team’s drama-filled year, marked by controversies, has likely contributed to this.
- Miami (OH): The RedHawks have had 4 players enter. A brand-new NCAA rule for the upcoming season is a roster cap of 18 players. Miami has 21 on their current roster and has more players incoming than leaving going into next year. With this new regulation, several programs will likely experience higher-than-usual turnover as they adjust their rosters.
- Alabama: With 4 transfers, the Crimson Tide is another high-profile program feeling the effects of the portal. All 4 of them are very young and still hold several years of eligibility.
- Clemson: Also with 4 transfers, Clemson’s player departures are due to the NCAA’s roster cut rule and several juniors choosing to graduate early and transfer elsewhere for one final season of eligibility.
- Other schools include Rider with 6, San Francisco with 5, and UNO with 4.
