Create a Player ProfileMac's Way Too Early Thoughts on 2027 Setters
Feels like I am drinking from a firehose right now getting an early start and watching so much of the 2027 players. Like seriously I am watching SO. MUCH. VOLLEYBALL. I’m loving what I am seeing. Of course, as a surprise to no one, I am spending a lot of time watching the 2027 setters and I’m loving what I'm seeing. Seeing these players is giving me a lot of hope for the future of the college setting game… I'm feeling like these club players are better than my class when we were 15.
The best college setters locate the ball well, have greatcourt awareness, and know who to set when. They understand and have one goal at the end of the day: set a hittable ball. I have always had the mindset as asetter that the ball needs to be good, not great. When a setter is aiming for good sets, the ball ends up in a place so a GOOD hitter can get a kill.
After watching the 2027 setters my big thing is that these setters are locating well. Overall, I'm thinking placement is not going to bean issue. Here are a few of the setters I’m really liking while I watch waaaaay too much volleyball… don’t worry the list will evolve:
Marissa Jones- A5, PPV 296- Talented overall athlete. Height causes her to play at such a high level.
Sophee Peterson- TAV, PPV 253- high volleyball IQ and reads the game well.
Tinsley Welker- Houston Skyline, PPV – Very fluid. Has a high ceiling. RunningBack Row attacks efficiently with her 15’s team- that’s impressive.
Marlie Smith- Legacy, PPV 255- smaller setter, but MAN she scoots around and makes PLAYS.
Malorie Boesiger- NE One, PPV 268- high volleyball IQ and only growing. Attack mentality.
Amelia Mullen- Oklahoma Charge, PPV 219- great from perfect pass. Efficiently running her offense.
Anya Baklenko- Madfrog, PPV 245 – runs the middle well. Sets the short string well.
London Evans- Munciana, PPV 156- pushed a ball from RB to left front. Wow.
Kamryn Mullican- Drive Nation, PPV 167- very offensive. Plays good defense. Pushes the long ball well.
Emerson Butler- Austin Skyline, PPV 171- strong. Athletic player.Serves and blocks well.
Lola Peters- 1 United VBC, PPV 173 – Runs a good offense from off the net. Athletic movement. Good defender.
This is what’s separating us from what everyone else does. I'm not just giving you a list here… I'm telling you things I'm seeing AND what coaches want to see. Power 4 coaches are looking for something special in their setter. As a setter you can't afford to fly under the radar. You have to find away to set yourself apart… these coaches aren’t just looking for a player to put a ball in the air because most of you are doing that. Coaches want to see a setter that’s figuring things out. Be a problem solver on the court… if your teams not winning YOU should be asking why.
